The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 (NDPS Act) is the Law to regulate, prohibit, and control the activities related to narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. It criminalizes the production, possession, sale, purchase, transport, and consumption of such substances. But allowed limited medical and scientific use under strict licensing.

Provisions of NDPS Act

Prohibitions
  • NDPS Act prohibits the production, manufacture, possession, sale, purchase, transport, warehousing, use, consumption of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances without authorization.
  • Strict control over cannabis, coca, opium, and synthetic drugs.

  • Central & State Governments empowered to regulate and permit certain operations.
  • Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) established for enforcement.
